A recent study indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
